Why Pets Prefer Running Water

Many cats and dogs instinctively prefer running water over still water in a bowl. In the wild, flowing water is typically fresher and safer than stagnant water. A pet water fountain satisfies this natural preference while keeping water filtered and oxygenated. Studies show that cats using water fountains drink significantly more water, which helps prevent kidney disease and urinary tract infections.

Types of Pet Water Fountains

• Stainless steel: The most hygienic option. Durable, easy to clean, and resistant to bacteria buildup. Does not cause chin acne in cats like plastic can.
• Ceramic: Heavy and stable, dishwasher safe, and aesthetically pleasing. A good choice for cats that like to tip things over.
• BPA-free plastic: Lightweight and affordable. Look for dishwasher-safe models and replace them if they become scratched, as scratches harbor bacteria.
• Multi-level: Fountains with multiple drinking heights work well in households with both cats and dogs of different sizes.

Key Features to Consider

Quiet operation is essential since most fountains run 24/7 and loud motors can deter sensitive pets. Look for fountains with submersible pumps rated below 40 decibels. Carbon filters remove impurities, odors, and improve taste, while foam pre-filters catch hair and debris to protect the pump. Most filters need replacement every 2 to 4 weeks.

Water capacity matters based on the number and size of your pets. A small fountain holding 50 ounces works fine for one cat, but a dog or multi-pet household needs at least 100 ounces. Check how easy the fountain is to disassemble for cleaning, as complex designs with many small parts become tedious to maintain.

Maintenance Tips

Clean your pet's water fountain thoroughly every 1 to 2 weeks. Disassemble completely, scrub all parts, and replace filters on schedule. Use a small brush to clean the pump intake. Refill with fresh water daily and monitor the water level to ensure the pump never runs dry, which can damage the motor.
